Abstract

Human resource needs are changing as the global situation evolves, including in communication. Human resources in the field of communication are not only being met by communication graduates but also from various branches of science. This research maps the composition of Knowledge, Skills, Capability, and Personality (KSCP) characteristics, and studies them with regards to human resources required by companies to fill in communication-related positions. The theory used is adopted from the Spector theory on Knowledge, Skills, Ability and Other, which was developed into KSCP. The qualitative interpretative approach is established as the primary method, with data collection through interviews. The research outcome shows that knowledge, skills, capability, and personality are all needed. Meanwhile, knowledge and skills are characters that can be built and developed if employees have good personality. As for capability, it will grow if supported by the development of knowledge and skills. For the communication field, employee candidates possessing these four characters do not necessarily have to graduate from a communication major, but they do have to understand communication. Based on this conclusion, it is recommended for communication education providers and academics in communication to underline the importance of personality, and include it in their lecture sessions, as well as off-campus activities, such as student activity units and other forms of activities. Furthermore, another research recommendation is to learn the field of communication deeper to examine the map of communication competency needs for companies.
